Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling (12 September 1818–26 February 1903) was born in Hertford County, North Carolina, to Jordan Gatling (14 May 1783–13 April 1848) and Mary Barnes Gatling (30 October 1795–30 September 1868). Jordan Gatling owned and farmed a large tract of land in Hertford County. James W. Denver was born near Winchester, Virginia. He attended public schools and moved to Ohio with his parents in 1830, settling near Wilmington. In 1841 he taught school in Missouri, and in 1844 he graduated from the law school of the University of Cincinnati. He was admitted to the bar and practiced law near Xenia, Ohio. A native of Virginia, Love began his military career by attending West Point. He served in the Army until 1852, when he moved to Indianapolis and married Mary F. Smith. Love became involved in railroad finance with his father-in-law, Oliver H. Smith, and later with Richard J. Gatling marketing Gatling guns.
